Film- Enjoy

Director- Perumal Kasi

Cast- Madan Kumar, Dancer Vignesh, Harish Kumar, Niranjana, Aparna, Charumisa, Sai Dhanya, Hasin, Yogi Ram.

The film is a contemporary take on how youngsters coping with peer pressure and in the pursuit of instant gratification of their desires, venture into unknown dangerous territories, and fall prey to antisocial elements. Debutant Perumal Kasi who has worked as a production manager for various films, dons the hat of a director here. What is appreciable is that he has tried to think out of the box, his concept refreshing. A tauter screenplay and more finesse in its execution, would have worked to the film’s advantage.

The film moves on three independent tracks that converge as the narrative progresses. On one, is a group of three freshers of a girl’s college. Hailing from the middle class, they in their desire to keep up with the joneses, learn of a quick way to make easy money.  The trio set out to a Kodaikanal club where secret sex parties were held. On another track are three boys, who for gratification of their sexual desires set out to Kodaikanal.  And there is a ruthless club owner running secret sex parties for privileged customers. It’s what happens when the tracks converge and the youngsters realise the dangerous terrain they had ventured into.

On the positive side, the director reveals a progressive outlook as he explores the mindset of youngsters and their cravings, and touches on sex by mutual consent. He also points out the pitfalls of thoughtlessly venturing into unknown territories to pursue such desires. The newcomers in the cast, a vibrant enthusiastic lot, perform with natural ease. The dialogue being laced with expletives and four letter words is understandable as it reflected the natural flow of conversation among the youngsters. But at times there is an overflow of double entendres that could have been avoided. There are some unwanted episodes forced in. Like the crassly handled one, where the guys give a lift to a man and two women. The whole episode of a mother- daughter duo & their interaction with the boys is totally off colour. The treatment could have done with more finesse. At the end of it, a relevant message is conveyed , without it sounding preachy.

A promising debut from a first time maker, ‘Enjoy’ offers much more than what one would have expected from a film by a debutant maker and his cast of freshers.
